The Formula to Baby Formulas

Choosing the right type of nourishment for an infant is a very important decision. The first thing to think about is whether you would like to breastfeed your newborn or use baby formula in lieu. There are perks to each so the decision is a matter of preference.

Breast feeding is natural and less expensive. Purchasing even store-brand formula can be pricey which may be a worthy deterrent. The first year of feeding your infant a formula exclusive diet can cost about $1,500. In addition, breastfeeding may provide the child with optimum nutrition and protection from infections.

If you chose a natural birth and would like to continue that trend or you would like to save a few extra dollars, then breastfeeding may be the best bet.

However, breastfeeding may not be possible for all mothers. If a mother is unable or the child is in need of something more specialized, formula is a more-than-capable alternative. Formula is designed to replicate a mother’s naturally-produced milk by combining an intricate blend of sugars, proteins and vitamins. In fact, formula even has nutrients that some breastfed babies may need to get from supplements.

Whatever the reason for choosing a formula exclusive diet, there are a few different types a new parent must take into consideration. The typical formula most children are given is cow’s-milk based. The majority of formula-fed babies do well with this type. However, there are also “gentle” formulas that contain less lactose as well as lactose-free formulas for children with intolerance. For children with acid reflux, there is formula with added rice starch. A soy formula is helpful for babies with milk protein allergies, lactose intolerance or galactosemia. Since premature babies need different nutrients, there is a formula designed just for them. Mothers of babies with milk protein and soy allergies can choose between essential formula and an amino-acid based formula depending on which works best for the child.

Many formula brands and types now contain DHA, ARA, prebiotics, probiotics and antioxidants among a plethora of other healthy ingredients. Most grocery and convenience stores carry a vast selection that is sure to fit even the most finicky baby’s needs.
